About Us

WIN is a non-profit organization servicing the needs of families in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties.

Mission Statement

To help families improve their life by providing programs and services that educate, enrich and empower.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress” – James 1:27

WIN’s goal is to provide unique assistance that fills the gap between what is available and what is necessary. Many organizations exist that offer various levels of assistance, and we do not intend to duplicate any existing program.

Women In Need began in 1997 when Karen Dionisio, an Eastern Shore Native, was confronted with a woman in need and she took action. Karen gathered a group of friends to help this woman and her family crisis. As a result of this single act of kindness, the non-profit organization “Women in Need, Inc.”(WIN) was born.

WIN began to help women in crisis, through it’s array of programs such as: Emergency Assistance, Transitional Housing, Rental Subsidies, etc. But they began to realize in order to achieve their mission of helping families “improve their life through programs and services that educate, enrich and empower”; they needed to shift their focus onto preparing for the long-term.

WIN now provides education and day care scholarships geared specifically toward furthering the education of single parent families. This exciting new program will help families achieve independence through greater employment prospects and allow them to better provide for their families.

Thrift Store

The WIN Thrift Store opened in 2002 offering weekly bargains and “new treasures” to local residents, which in turn provides necessities for families. In 2016 WIN opened a second pop-up boutique location in downtown Chestertown. Visit the WIN Thrift Store website here.

Alley Teen Center

In 2007 the Alley Teen Center opened serving area youth with programs like after school tutoring, Youth to Youth, Shoreman Basketball Club, Girls Circle and Boys Council. In 2015, WIN officially ended Alley Teen Center programming. We were honored to have served our communities youth for so many years.
